Why you should buy this

Supporting traditional skills

All products are made in the designers studio in London by Veryan herself and other skilled tailors she hires part time.  This way they are able to support and create work for a craftsmanship that in many ways is about to be forgotten, and are giving economic growth to the local community.

Excellent working conditions

Veryan only work with freelance seamstresses / pattern cutter on an irregular basis if she needs to. Other than that, it’s only her doing all the work in her studio in UK. All tailors get fair pay for their work. The working process with the workers are close and open.

Reducing waste

All items are produced “Made to Order”, on demand, not before you order them. This process hinders overproduction and elevates the value of each item.

The construction techniques are thought out to ensure longevity. Veryan are using fabric off-cuts for making bias binding or storing them for future use as smaller pattern components. They are also reducing waste through paperless filing, recycling in the studio alongside using recyclable packaging. Both Veryan and her fabric suppliers use carboard packaging when possible and recycle all cardboard and wrapping when not possible to reuse.

This product is biodegradable and can be composted in a compost bin with other biodegradable materials when worn out. Read our post about how to compost your items when they are dead.

Low Carbon Footprint

Veryan does all her production in London and buys all her raw material from one supplier, the Organic Textile Company. They make sure to ship fabrics, don’t fly them. The colouring process is also done in the UK. Veryans components are sourced largely from the UK and—as much as possible—from local shops & businesses. These measurements saves a lot of travel miles and carbon emissions in the production process.

Trusted supplier

Veryan works mainly with one trusted supplier that delivers durably-woven and ethically-sourced textiles; the Organic Textile Company. This company work directly with their main partner Ganesh in Kerala to produce small runs of 100–300m of fabric.  They have three mills in Turkey and India, all GOTS certified, and only use GOTS certified yarn.

The Organic Textile Company look at every aspect of their business to try to make it environmental sound and fair. The company was established  around 2005, though they have been selling fabric for over thirty years. Nearly all fabrics are made directly for Organic Textile Company. They employ four people, and also do give-back projects in their local community.

In 2012, Organic Textile Company was recognised by Ethical Fashion Forum‚ with a Source Awards in the Fabrics & Components Category (Sustainable Supplier – 3.2).

This product is grown in compliance with organic agricultural standards that protect the environment and wildlife. Natural methods are used to manage soil quality, diseases, and other issues that arise during the farming process. It is not made with use of synthetic fertilizers or herbicides that strip land of nutrients, and artificial chemicals and GM (Genetically Modified) crops are banned.

Organic products do not produce sewage sludge or ionizing radiation, and the organic materials have been sourced with use of natural pesticides. The treatment of the material is also chemical free and holistic.

This products does not contain any animal material or by-product from animals.

Non Toxic

The Organic Textile Company dye their fabric with non-toxic dyes. also the Blue Mill, the dyers that Veryan use in UK create unique dye-colours for each collections, made from non-toxic reactive dyes.

All fabrics are prewashed by Veryan, using laundry liquid Ecover. This is an independently dermatlogically tested detergent, B Corp certified; Ocean Plastic Project Observer, and Ethical Award Winner detergent for 2015.
