How it's made
Good working conditions
Too Damn Expensive only work with one manufacturer, a small family driven Chinese factory that Designer Elisabeth visits with each new collection. The relationship is consistent and close, despite the distance between Norway and China. The label have a plan to get an even closer working relationship with them in time. It is difficult to find a factory delivering the highest quality, who is also willing to work with small batch production, so staying and working with them over time is essential. Therefore we can, for now, say that Elisabeth and TDE are working with a factory where the working conditions are good, where they only have permanent employees and never use agency labour, and where there are guaranteed no child labour, forced labour or underpay. The factory also visit their sub-suppliers for monitoring purposes annually and also supply them with social/welfare expertise.
This product does not contain any animal material, or by-products from animals.
Close to Non Toxic
The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for lyocell/ Tencel rates the amine oxide solvent used to digest the wood pulp as being non-toxic, and about 99% is recovered and recycled during the manufacturing process. Waste products in the air and water from the manufacturing process are minimal, and considered harmless. Lyocell fiber is eco-friendly since products made from it can be recycled and Lyocell is biodegradable because it is a cellulosic fiber. Products made from Lyocell can be recycled, incinerated, or digested in sewage. The fiber will usually degrade completely in just eight days in waste treatment plants.
The process to manufacture Lyocell fiber is in fact very nearly a closed loop process in which bleach is not required. Bleach is commonly required in fabric manufacturing, especially for cotton.
This product is biodegradable and can be composted in a compost bin with other biodegradable materials when worn out. Remove zippers, buttons, etc, which also can be repurposed and used again.
Water Saving and energy saving
The making of Tencel/ Lyocell uses much less energy than many other fabrics.
