How it's made
Labour Welfare Pluss
This product is made in the village of Henavala outside of Kandy in Sri Lanka. There are 22 artisants engaged with Kantala at the moment, and they range in age from 24 to 72 years. They are paid 15% above the inflation adjusted -“rural income receiver’s mean income per month. An important part of the collaboration with the artisans and the village where this 300 year old traditional craft is done, is communication, respect and openness.
Also the part of this product that is handloomed, is Fair Trade guaranteed by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).This includes the lining fabric of all bags and handles which are purchased directy from Selyn, Sri Lanka’s only WFTO Guaranteed Member in the handloom sector.
– Under the Labour welfare section it should be “””
Water saving
The core material of this product, the handwoven mats, is made of the Hana plant (Agave cantala). This plant requires no watering, pesticides and insecticides to grow. It is therefore one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly material sources available. The plant can reach up to 2 meters in height and the leaves are scraped by hand to extract a very strong but fine and translucent fiber.
Low Toxic
No toxins are used in the making of this product except from the colouring process. Here Kantala only use OEKO TEX 100 certified reactive dyes, and the process is controlled and leaves no chemicals in nature or water resources. Colours such as beige and black are extracted from belleric pods, a natural source.
Recycled
This product is also made using Piñatex™, a plant based alternative to animal leather and unlike petroleum based synthetics leather alternativecs, such as PU, this on is made from pineapple leaf fibre.
Upcycled
All extra pieces on this product (logo’s, extra connection D-rings, strap adjustment sliders etc) are all made from up-cycled polished coconut shells.
Supporting Traditional Skills
The craft of the handwoven hana mat originated over 300 years ago in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal kingdom. 300 years on, the descendants still reside in this village and carries on the craft with pride. It has been under threat of extinction, so by breathing new life into the craft Kantala strengthens it, attracts yonger people to learn the craft and gives economic growth to the community. The same techniques and tools are still used, and it takes nearly 8 hours for a well trained artisan to weave a plain mat of 10ft.
Vegan
All Kantala products carry PETA’s vegan certification, and no animals were harmed when making this product.
Low Carbon Footprint
All production is done in Sri Lanka and most of the materials are sourced locally. The Pinatex and YKK zippers are not locally sourced.

Care
Give your Kantala handbag a careful dusting, a gentle waxing and a generous amount of love.
Brush the fibre mat with a soft brush or cloth in the direction of the fibre. Use a natural colourless wax to refresh the Piñatex® surface areas. When not in use, store it in the provided dustbag.
In the event the handbag gets wet, use a soft dry cloth to wipe it off and leave to dry in an airy place. Also, give it a big warm hug so it knows everything’s going to be just fine.
